Open Letter to Red Deer Public School Trustee Candidates

In early August 2021, I wrote an article supporting the fact that classrooms were safe for our children to return to given the data that is available to us, 18 months into this pandemic. Per updated statistics published by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, the number of individuals aged 0-19 who have passed away from COVID-19 as of September 10, 2021 was 15. While all deaths are tragic, severe outcomes from cancer, accidents, suicide, heart disease and influenza are more prevalent in minors.
Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, has recently called for the Province of Ontario to require COVID-19 vaccination for students who are eligible based on their age/year of birth.
According to Alberta’s Education Act, every child as of September 1 of each school year, who is age six or older and younger than 19 years of age and is a Canadian citizen/permanent resident or has a parent who is a Canadian citizen/permanent resident is guaranteed the right of access to education.
With this information in mind, I (and many other parents) are concerned about the potential for Alberta to also require the mRNA treatment as a requirement for access to schooling? It is our belief that we are best equipped to make medical decisions for our children, not the government.
Given the low risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19 in children and the experimental nature of the mRNA treatments, we are asking for your confirmation prior to the October 18, 2021 election, whether you will respect & defend the rights of all parents to make medical decisions for their children.
Please provide written confirmation of your position by October 8, 2021 to enable parents the time required to review your position prior to the election.
