Open Letter to Canadians
May 25, 2021
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Red Deer – Mountain View, AB
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms 2(b): freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media communication.
Cancel culture: “is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles – whether it be online, on social media, or in person”.
Just because you disagree with someone, does that warrant their deplatforming, the extinguishment of their livelihood and their alienation from society?
Why are people deemed to be anti-science, climate deniers or tin hats if they question government?
Who decides what “fake news” is? The government? Big Tech?
Wouldn’t open debate and sharing of ideas benefit all of us?
What happens if your opinion on the next crisis or significant public event differs from the mainstream narrative? Should your voice be cancelled at that time?
If someone’s expressions do not violate Section 319 of the Criminal Code of Canada, should those expressions be allowed to be shared with the public without fear of recourse?
Isn’t this the point of Charter Rights? To protect the individual from government overreach, not the government from the overreach of each individual?
I may not agree with your line of thinking but I fully support everyone’s right to express their opinions and beliefs, especially in the middle of a pandemic. Will you do the same for others?
Sincerely,
Jared Pilon
Libertarian Party Candidate for Red Deer – Mountain View, AB
